Sea sponges
What are sea sponges?
Sea sponges are the most primitive of the
multicelled animals. The scientific name or another name for
sea sponges is phylum porifera.
What are sea sponges made of?
Sea sponges are made up of porous masses of
cells. Sea sponges possess no organs such as a mouth or
stomach. Sea sponges do not even have real tissues such as
skin. Sea sponges are simply porous masses of cells
which continuously absorb and expel water through
themselves.
Flagella
What are flagella?
Flagella are tiny whiplike structures of cells
of sea sponges.
Function of the flagella
Flagella maintain the current of seawater
and also trap food particles carried inside. The
flagella bodies are stiffened by skeleton of minute needle
like spicules, a meshwork of spongin fibers or a combination of
both.
